Who We Are
The Shawano County Literacy Council (SCLC) is an adult education, community-based non-profit organization. It was established to provide basic literacy to adults to enable them to fully participate in society.
All of our tutoring services are provided free of charge and are completely confidential.
What We Do
When an adult learns to read, the results ripple out into the community. Adult literacy is linked to better health and higher income levels.
Our tutors are trained to teach adults. They work with two groups:
~ Basic Students: Native born adults functioning below a high school level in reading and writing.
~ ELL Students: English Language Learners are non-native speakers, who are learning reading, writing, and speaking the English language for the first time, or are interested in improving their skills.
Our trained, volunteer tutors provide one-on-one confidential tutoring to adult residents of Shawano County. We also need people with organizational skills, creativity, and skills to sharpen our focus, expand our base, and illuminate our cause throughout our community.
Our mission is to promote literacy in the Shawano County area and to teach non-reading adults to read.
